Obituary for W.L. Ray

Funeral services for W.L Ray, 84, will be held Thursday, October 1, 2020 at 2 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with Norman Jones, pastor of the Primitive Baptist Church, Snyder, Okla. officiating. Burial will follow in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, September 30 at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel.
W.L. passed away Sunday, September 27, 2020 in Childress.
He was born September 3, 1936 in Collingsworth County to Nathaniel Lee Ray and Ethel Jones Ray. He grew up in and around Quail, Texas and graduated from Quail High School. He married Barbara Norman January 9, 1957 in Quail. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1956. Upon his honorable discharge in 1958, he worked several jobs before joining Lone Star Gas Company where he worked 36 years before his retirement in 1997.
W.L. always had a smile on his face and enjoyed wood working, square dancing and traveling to Branson, Missouri on Veteran’s Day. He also coached Little League baseball and softball and in his later years enjoyed working in his yard. He was extremely proud of his country and his service in the Marine Corps. He proudly wore his Marine Corps hat everywhere he went, which often got his meal paid for by others thanking him for his service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Dorothy Hodge and a brother, James Norman Ray.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Childress; a son, Nathan L. Ray and wife, Sheryl of Katy; a daughter, Karen Nelson and husband, Turk of Childress; four grandchildren, Jessica Husband of San Antonio, Jennifer Husband of Dallas, Jacob Ray and wife, Alison of Katy and Caleb Ray of Katy; a sister, Bessie Langford and husband, Billy and a brother, Denzil Ray and wife, Chris.
