W.H. Wood, Jr., age 83 of Memphis and formerly of Childress, passed away on Monday, August 29, 2016. Graveside services will be held at 10 A.M. on Saturday, September 3, 2016 in Childress Cemetery with Rev. Chad King officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. A public reception will be held immediately following the service at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. W.H. was born on February 13, 1933 in Brice, Texas to William Henry and Ruby Wood. He married Billie Dell Martin on October 6, 1951. W.H. worked for TxDOT for over 41 years as an Engineering Technician. He was the District Lab Engineer for District 25 for many years. In his spare time, he loved to play golf, and in his later years he repaired golf carts for many local and area golfers and was affectionately known by some as the “Golf Cart Doctor.” He was an excellent mechanic and could fix almost anything that was not working. Above all else, W.H. was the family leader and loved each and every one of his family dearly. He taught his sons the value of hard work, and took great pride in attending and participating in their athletic activities and other school functions. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Billie; a sister, Shirley Mae; a brother, Richard Wood; granddaughter, Andrea Wood; and a nephew, Robby Wood. Survivors include: three sons, Kevin Wood and wife, Cara of Conroe, TX, Kerry Wood and wife, Beverly and Kent Wood and wife, Pam, all of Childress; five grandchildren, Deane Crim and husband, Rody of Childress, Kyle Wood and wife, Chelby of Ropesville, TX, Katherine Iannuccilli and husband, Jared of Smithtown, NY, Kurt Wood of Decatur, TX, and Kregg Wood and wife, Jordon of Leedy, OK; three great-grandchildren, Kamryn, Grayson and Keegan; nieces and nephews, Lana Kay Hubbard and husband, Dwight of DeSoto, Karen Lewis of Amarillo, Donna Butler of Canyon, Teddy Martin and wife, Kim of Willis, TX, Keith Martin and wife, Charlotte of Wellington, Roddy Waites and wife, Linda of Murchison, TX, Randy Martin of Lubbock, and Kelly Wood and wife, Sandy of Memphis, TX; sister-in-law Patsy Martin of Wellington; and numerous extended family.
