Thelma Odessa (Booker) Norman, age 103, passed away on June 21, 2016. Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church Chapel in Childress, TX at 10:00am, Thursday, June 23, 2016 with Norman Rushing officiating and Norman Jones assisting. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Wellington, TX under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Thelma Odessa (Booker) Norman was born January 5, 1913, in Childress, Texas to Mrs. Edna Thompson Booker. Thelma’s father, Jake A. Booker, had passed away on December 6, 1912, one month before she was born. They were living with her beloved grandparents, Napolian and Mary Caroline Thompson. Thelma was 103 years, 5 months, and 16 days of age when she passed from this life. Through her 103 years she had experienced many things and seen many changes. When she was 6 years old, her mother remarried, and she then had 5 stepbrothers and moved to a farm a few miles from Carey. This was quite a change for her! She loved to tell stories about her chores on the farm – how it was her job to take care of the chickens, along with cooking and hoeing in the cotton fields. She said she was pretty slow at picking cotton, because she always wanted her cotton to be as clean as she could get it. She told about walking a mile to school at Purple Hill. Then, when they consolidated with Carey, she still had to walk a mile to get on the school bus to ride the few miles to Carey. She graduated from Carey High School in 1930. Thelma worked as a bookkeeper for J.C. Penney’s here in Childress for 35 years. Then, after she left that job, she kept books for Watkins for several years. She married Ethrich Jackson Norman in 1954. They were married for 12 years until his passing in 1966. Their years together were not long, but they had a wonderful marriage and enjoyed many good times. Ethrich was her pastor and had the privilege of baptizing her. They were members of the Primitive Baptist Church Thelma enjoyed painting and was a member of an art club here in Childress. She was an avid reader and loved to garden and work in her beautiful yard. She also loved to travel and was always ready to go! Those preceding her in death are: her husband, Ethrich; her stepson, Reece Norman and wife, Gloria; her stepdaughter, Ethra Jean Norman Rushing and husband, Bill; a granddaughter Susie Floyd and husband, Charlie; and a niece, Kay Long Foster. She is survived by her granddaughter, Cindy Ade and husband, Doug; grandson, Jimmy Norman and wife, Ramona; grandson, Kelly Rushing and wife, Gimmye; a grandson, Norman Rushing and wife, I.B.; several great grandchildren; nieces and nephews, Marion Bownds, Bobbie Ariola, Betty and Benson Long, Daryl and Jean Long, Sharon and Jerry Smith, Noel and Donna Long, Melvin and Sarah Long, Matt and Kelly Foster, and Mark Foster; many great nephews and nieces; a cousin, Steve Campbell; and very special friends that she considered family, Polo and Anna Lizama and their children, Polo Jr., Rosemary, Irene, and Armando.
