Obituary for Sandra Smothermon
With great sadness, the family of Sandra G. “Sandi” Smothermon announce her passing on November 12, 2019 in Childress.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 15, 2019 at 12 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church of Childress with Pastor Randy Wilson officiating.
Visitation will be held Thursday, November 14, 2019 from 6-8 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home.
The eldest of four children, Sandi was born to R.E. “Gene” and Nina Nelson on November 18, 1949. She graduated from Childress High school in 1968, and later married Gary Smothermon, with whom she had a son, Jacob.
Sandi was fortunate enough to have held many jobs throughout her life, including managing the Childress bowling alley, working for Lancer Mobile Homes, book-keeping for various medical offices and other local businesses, working for AT&T in Austin, Bird & Bird law offices and working as a long-time secretary for Charles and Diane Mashburn of Mashburn Realty and Trucking. Most recently, she had the great fortune and joy of babysitting children at her home in Childress, a duty she cherished until she was physically unable to continue caring for them.
Sandi was preceded in death by her father Gene and niece Nicole Nelson.
Survivors include her mother, Nina Nelson; brother Todd Nelson and wife Dajuana; sister, Barbara Parr and husband Brett; brother, Turk Nelson and wife Karen, all of Childress; son, Jacob Smothermon and wife Melissa of Rowlett; granddaughter Noa Smothermon of Rowlett; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend their most sincere appreciation to Childress We Can Care for their tireless work in assisting local cancer patients and Childress Regional Medical Center Hospice for their care and compassion for patients and families in times of great need.
