Obituary for Ross Smith

Ross Smith, age 84, died Tuesday, September 10, 2013 in Childress. Services will be at 11:00 AM Friday, September 13, 2013 in First Presbyterian Church with Cliff Johnson and Randy Lanford officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Johnson Funeral Home on Thursday, September 12, 2013 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Ross was born February 13, 1929 in Childress to Herman and Agnes Ross Smith. He was the grandson of T.A. and Pearl Ross who were pioneers who helped settle Childress in 1898. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America and a proud member of the Boneheads, in his youth. He graduated from Childress High School in 1946 and received his B.S. degree from Texas A&M College in 1950. After graduation, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force; was honorably discharged and released from service with the rank of Captain. Upon leaving the Armed Services, he returned to Childress and went into business with his father as partner and eventually was owner of Smith Motor Company. His service to the community included President of the Childress Chamber of Commerce and President of Rotary and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He and former Janet Camp married July 16, 1955. She was the source of his greatest happiness for over 58 years. Ross was a 60 year Mason. He was active in the First Presbyterian Church serving as deacon and elder. He was also a charter member of the Childress Red Cross. Ross was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling, and relished his many friendships that were cultivated over a rich lifetime. He is preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Agnes Smith. Memorials may be made to Childress Regional Medical Center Hospice at PO Box 1030, Childress, TX 79201. Fourteen Great Grandchildren Three Nieces-Kathryn Barnett, Kerry Hoffmans, and Kay Dowell; Five great nephews and nieces- Mark Barnett, Krista and Erika Hoffmans, Ashley and Jeremy Dowell.
