Obituary for Roger Simmons

Graveside services for Roger Simmons, 80, will be held Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at 2 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Honey Grove, Texas with Terry Cunningham officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.
He passed away Sunday, December 20, 2020 in Childress.
He was born January 13, 1940 to Jesse Joe Simmons and Esther Rogers Simmons in Honey Grove, Texas.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, a police officer in Arizona, a carpenter, he worked for Furr's Planning and Energy Department and was a contractor who owned Simmons Construction. Later in life, he became a pastor and served in that role at Central Christian Church of Childress. He was also involved in Habitat for Humanity in Lubbock, delivered for Childress Meals on Wheels, served on the Childress CASA Board and was a member of the Childress Ministerial Alliance.
He loved to travel, to visit museums, the outdoors, nature, family and he loved a good steak. He was a father, husband, grandfather and a friend to many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Raymond Wayne Simmons, a sister Alvelynne Evans, a brother Buck Simmons and a brother Curtis Simmons.
Survivors include his wife Frances Marie Simmons of Childress; a son Jesse Leon Simmons of Stillwater, Okla.; stepchildren Brett Henderson and wife, Catherine, of Madrid, Spain, Stephanie Leatherwood of Childress and Tresa Sims of Childress, a sister Betty Mills; a sister-in-law Beulah Simmons of Honey Grove along with many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
