Obituary for Robert Carter
Funeral services for Robert Carter, 90, will be held Thursday, October 22 at 2 p.m. at the Childress Church of Christ with Trey Morgan and Dr. Mike Henderson officiating. Burial will follow in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Thursday, October 22, 2020 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home.
He passed away Tuesday, October 20, 2020 in Amarillo.
Robert Carl Carter was born December 16, 1929 in Childress to James Frank Carter and Elsie Gretta Smith.
He married Anne Villyard on May 31, 1950 in Childress
Robert loved his family, loved watching his grandkids play sports, loved his church and loved the Childress Bobcats. He was instrumental in starting the prison ministry at the T.L. Roach, Jr. Unit. He began his career as a rancher after receiving an animal husbandry degree from Abilene Christian University. Soon, however, he returned to Childress in 1961 where he took over Villyards from his father-in-law Roy A. Villyard. He sold the business and retired, however, he had trouble not working and worked as a sales rep for a few years. He was active in the community and the Childress Church of Christ serving as an elder for 40 years in the church and civically as president of the Childress Rotary Club and the Childress Chamber of Commerce and also worked with the local chapter of the American Red Cross. He loved golf and thoroughly enjoyed playing at StoneyRidge Golf Course where he once hit a hole-in-one. He also loved working his his yard and was proud of his grass and his pecan trees.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Villyard Carter; four brothers Leon Carter, Taylor Carter, James Frank Carter, Jr. and John Carter; four sisters Margaret Clifton Price, Jimmie Faye Clifton Wheeler, Nina Mable Clifton and Elsie Carter Eyer along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Survivors include his wife Anne Carter of Amarillo; a daughter Debbie Matthews and husband, Jackie of Amarillo; a grandson Daniel Matthews and wife, Shauna of Amarillo; a granddaughter Amy Hargrove and husband, Jason of Bushland; great grandchildren Bailey and Bryce Hargrove of Bushland and numerous nieces and nephews.
