Robert Calvin Cannon, Jr., also known as Son Cannon or R.C. Cannon, Jr., was born August 29, 1946, to Richard Cannon and Edna Smith in Quanah, Texas. He took his last breath and transitioned to his place of rest on July 21, 2022 in Amarillo, Texas.
Robert was raised in Childress, Texas. He went to school in Childress and graduated from J.J. Rhoads High School in 1964. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed at Clinton Sherman Air Force Base in Clinton, Oklahoma. Robert was also stationed at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City.
In the Air Force, Robert served as a security policeman until 1968. He later received an honorable discharge from the military. Some of the awards he received while serving include: the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksman, and the National Defense Service Medal for serving during the Vietnam War. Robert later became registered as a disabled veteran and was immensely proud of the time he served his country. He often displayed his pride by flying the American flag in his front yard and exercising his right to vote and to bear arms.
For some years, Robert also worked as a home health aide in his hometown, assisting geriatric individuals with daily living skills and running errands. Some of the things he loved to do in his spare time were small game hunting, fishing, listening to music (loudly), barbecuing, smoking Nicaraguan cigars, watching sports on TV and admiring his gun collection.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Michael Tanzie, Charles Miller-Smith, Floyd Knight, Laudis Dupre, and Debra Baldwin; and his grandson Jessie High.
He leaves to mourn his passing: his children Carla Kennedy (Dallas), Robert Cannon III (Lubbock), Reginald Cannon (Amarillo), Sharron High (Amarillo), Tamela Brandon (Oklahoma City), and LaSonia Cannon (Oklahoma City); his siblings, Billy Cannon (Austin), Alexander Sims (Lubbock), Leslie Wayne Sims (Plainview), and Oreva Vajdl (Plainview); 22 grandchildren, a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many special friends.
