Obituary for Nell West

Memorial services for Nell West, 82, will be held Friday June 9 at 1 p.m. at the Joe E. Jones Memorial Chapel at Childress Cemetery with Dr. Mike Henderson officiating. She passed away April 23, 2023 in her home in Fort Worth, Texas.

Born May 18,1940 in Tahoka, Texas to Fred and Joyce Nolen, she married Ronald Terrell West on March 15, 1963 in Lubbock ,Texas. They were married 36 wonderful years before his passing in 1999.

They moved to Childress from Lubbock in 1965. Nell lived in the home they built together until 2018 when she moved to Fort Worth to live with daughter, Jeri. Nell loved her little family very much. She was a caring and devoted wife, a loving and attentive mother and the BEST Mama Nell to her grandsons. Nell was a hairdresser for over 55 years, a confidante and friend to her customers, many of whom were clients for 20 years or more. She remained lifelong friends with coworkers too. Nell loved her job and never wanted to retire. Nell was an avid card player. She loved Bridge. She was a real “Card Shark.” She and her Bridge club would meet weekly at her house for hours of laughter and friendly competition. She loved any kind of game. She raised her family with game nights every week and played games with Jeri’s friends on weekends when they begged her for monopoly, teaching them how to be good sports. She loved to go on shopping trips with family and she was a most excellent cook leaving behind many recipes.

She is preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Jackie Bowden; and beloved husband, Ronald West.

Survivors include her daughter, Jeri Oldaker and husband, Bruce, of Fort Worth; grandsons Tyler De Shazo of Oakley, Kansas and Jayce Gilmore of Cypress, Texas.
