Obituary for Mildred "Drake" Wilson

Mildred (Drake) Wilson, age 96, passed away on Friday, February 17, 2017. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, February 25, 2017 in the First Baptist Church Chapel with Rev. Randy Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Mildred was born on June 20, 1920 in Childress County, Texas to Thomas Patrick Drake and Mattie Carrie (Davis) Drake. She attended grade school in Garden Valley and graduated as Valedictorian of her class at Carey High School in 1938. She married Mike Wilson on November 26, 1938, and they shared 57 loving and happy years together. She loved God, her family and her friends. She was a wonderful cook and she enjoyed making special meals for her family and friends. Many family gatherings took place at the home she and Mike lovingly opened to family and friends. Although home was her first priority, she worked as Secretary to the Childress City Manager and at Fox Clinic. She also was the accountant for Mike’s garage business for many years. Mildred was very active at the First Baptist Church where she taught a children’s Sunday school class, took care of the babies in the nursery and provided meals for the church functions and funerals. Mildred loved to smile, laugh, and spend time with her friends and family. She was determined to stay in touch with them, even those who did not live in Childress and she wrote many letters to make sure everyone knew she loved them. Above all else, Mildred loved her family, and with great joy she watched her children grow up and accomplish their goals. When they were children, she was very active in their many school and extracurricular events and even served as Campfire Girls leader. She was a great lady, and a wonderfully loving and devoted mother and grandmother. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, husband Mike Wilson, infant son Anthony Drake Wilson, son Michael Wilson, and nine siblings, Mary, Charlie, Tom, Vance, Bill, Quinton, Martha, Euphrates, and Roy. Survivors include a daughter, Judy Costarino and husband, Tom of McCormick, SC; grandsons Matthew Wilson and wife, Carrie of Lincoln, NE; Christopher Wilson of Colorado Springs, CO; and granddaughter Jennifer Costarino of Charlotte, NC; Amy Irving and husband, Patrick; Brian Wilson and wife, Liz; Troy McKay and wife, Aunnie—all of California; Kitty Wells and husband, John of Bluffton, SC; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous extended family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to “We Can Care”, PO Box 7, Childress, Texas 79201. We Can Care is a Childress charity that provides funds for medical transportation for critically ill patients.
