Melba Fern (Jones) Speir, age 81, passed away on Saturday, May 19, 2018 in Amarillo. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at the First Assembly of God Church in Childress with Gary McClendon, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at Johnson Funeral Home. Melba was born on February 12, 1937 in Carey, Texas to Harley and Bertie (Allen) Jones. Melba grew up in Childress, and spent her life here. She and William “Bill” Speir were married on February 12, 1954 in Childress. She worked for the State of Texas for over 25 years, and was a life-long member of the First Assembly of God Church in Childress. Melba was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill and one grandchild, Steven K. Savely. Survivors include two sons, Roger Speir and wife, Cyndi of Childress, and Gregory Speir and wife, Marcella of Cedar Park, TX; a daughter, Susan Savely and husband, Kevin of Carthage, TX; former daughter-in-law, Janet Ewing of Amarillo; three sisters, Mary Jo Ransom of Bonham, TX, Francis Olean Davis of Denison, TX, and Tressie LaVon Wilson of Palo Pinto, TX; special friends, Floyd and Oleta Richardson of Wichita Falls, TX; nine grandchildren, Lori Crowell and husband, Jarrod, Angela Speir, Jennifer Olson and husband, Jeremy, Jessica Speir, Nicholas Speir, Jordan Speir, Danielle Clark, Kaylynn Baker, and Amber Baker; thirteen great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family and friends.
