Mary LaVerne Martin, age 83 of Childress, passed away on October 13, 2016. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 10 AM in the Joe E. Jones Memorial Chapel in Childress Cemetery with Kerry Wood officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 6 to 7 PM on Friday, October 14, 2016 at Johnson Funeral Home. Mary was born on January 29, 1933 in Childress to Andrew Wilson “A.W.” and Mable Sue (Keith) Smothermon. She and Murray Dalton Martin were married on May 24, 1950 at Community Center in Childress County. She loved to play bridge, and had become quite skilled at it over the 50 years that she had played. Above all else, Mary was a loving mother, grandmother and sister and her family was her pride and joy. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother A.W. Smothermon, Jr., and a sister Bennie Jean Kidwell. Survivors include son Terry Martin and wife, Rita of Vernon; daughter Janice Timmons and husband, James of Northfield; son Shane Martin and wife, Patty of Vernon; one brother Don Smothermon and wife, Lolita of Childress; one sister LaJuana Mills of Childress; six grandchildren, Kristi Timmons, Tandy Martin, Cody Timmons, Candis Smith, Jade Martin and Kade Martin; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; nieces and nephews David Smothermon, Robbie Cummins and Derric Martin; and numerous extended family and friends.
