Obituary for Anne Carter

Funeral services for Anne Carter, 92, will be held Saturday, October 28, 2023 at 2 p.m. at the Childress Church of Christ with Trey Morgan offiicating. Burial will follow in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Saturday, October 28, 2023 from 10 a.m. to Noon at Johnson Funeral Home.

She passed away Tuesday, October 24, 2023 in Amarillo.

Anne was born in Quanah, Texas to Roy and Bessie Villyard. At age 3, they moved from Quanah, Texas to Childress, Texas. In 1950, she graduated from Childress High School.

On May 31, 1950, she married Robert Carter, who was her high school sweetheart. They lived in Hungerford, Texas until 1961, when they moved back to Childress, TX to take over Villyard’s Plumbing and Air Conditioning. They owned and operated this business for 34 years.

Anne loved Childress and gave her heart and soul to the community. She was a loyal Childress Bobcat fan and attended many sporting events over the years.

She was a faithful and active member of the Childress Church of Christ. As an Elder’s wife, she devoted her time and energy toward teaching classes and supporting mission work.

Anne was an avid reader and served on the Childress Library Board. She was involved in several civic organizations, including the Childress Economic Development Board. In 1992, she was awarded The Chamber of Commerce, “Woman of the Year.”

She loved to travel and was able to go to many destinations all over the world. She especially loved to travel to Arlington, TX to watch the Texas Rangers play baseball.

Those who knew her, adored her. She was not only a great friend to have, but a wise Christian counselor. She would often send out cards and letters to family and friends to keep the connection. Even in her later years, she made it a priority to check on her friends through Facebook.

Her family meant the world to her. She adored her grandchildren and supported all of their activities. She hosted several family reunions, in order to keep up with her and her husband’s extended family.

In 2019, she and Robert moved from Childress, TX to Amarillo, TX and resided at Brookdale MediPark West. In 2020, she was widowed.

Anne was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Bessie Villyard, husband Robert Carter, brother Charlie Villyard and infant son Villyard Carter.

She is survived by daughter, Debbie Matthews and her husband Jackie of Amarillo, TX, grandson Daniel Matthews and his wife Shauna, granddaughter Amy Hargrove, her husband Jason and their two children Bailey and Bryce.
