Obituary for Marguerite Havins

Marguerite Bohannon Havins, age 94, passed away on Wednesday, August 23, 2017. A Celebration of Life will be at 1 PM on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church with Bill DuBose, officiating, and Lou Ellerbrook assisting. Burial will follow in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM on Friday, August 25, 2017 at Johnson Funeral Home. Marguerite was born on July 16, 1923 in Lazare, TX to Beacher Hanley and Dora Bell (Downing) Bohannon. She graduated from Tell High School in 1940, eventually moving into Childress to begin working at the Hotel Childress Coffee Shop as a waitress. In 1943 during WWII, an opportunity to work at the Childress Post Office became available, and Marguerite was hired as a clerk. During her time at the Post Office, a soldier returning home from service in 1944 was also hired to work at the Post Office. His name was Littleton Havins. A courtship began, and on April 17, 1946, Marguerite & Littleton were married. Marguerite moved on to become Assistant County School Superintendent until she and Littleton started their family. She retired from her final job in the County Vehicle Registration Office in 1988. Marguerite became a member of the First Methodist Church of Childress shortly after she and Littleton were married. She continued her dedication to her Lord and to her church by serving others through out the community through her love of baking cakes, pies and dinner rolls. Marguerite also served actively and faithfully in various capacities of the church from being an elementary Sunday School teacher, volunteer for VBS, and fundraising for new church building funds, and United Methodist Women. For several years, she & Littleton served to head the Greeting Committee for Sunday morning services. When Marguerite decided to slow down on her church volunteer activities in her later years, she was still seen as an active participant in her walk of Christian faith, service and fellowship by providing a baked dessert whenever needed. Marguerite was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Littleton Havins; her parents; and one sister, Joyce Wallace. Survivors include her two children: Danny Havins and wife, Ronda of Vernon; Carolyn Hyden and husband, Alsie of Oklahoma City; sister, Delores Behrens of Lubbock; two grandchildren: Lindsay Chandler and husband, Cody of Hereford; Wade Havins and wife, Amy of Dallas; one great grandchild, Ralph Bonham Havins; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. It was Marguerite’s wish that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church, 201 Ave. D, NE, Childress, TX 79201.
