Obituary for Margaret Leftwich

Margaret (Mundy) Leftwich, 102, passed peacefully on Friday, January 11, 2018 in her home. Services celebrating her life will be at 1 PM on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Lou Ellerbrook officiating. Private family burial will follow under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM on Monday, January 15, 2018 at Johnson Funeral Home. Margaret Mundy Leftwich was born on August 24, 1915 under kerosene lanterns on a farm near Shamrock, Texas. She graduated from Shamrock High School, which at the time only went through 11 grades, in a class of seven students. At sixteen she continued her education at the University of Texas in Austin. In her 40’s, she returned to college and in 1958 graduated with highest honors, receiving a Bachelor’s of Education Degree from West Texas College in Canyon, Texas. She immediately began a 17-year teaching career as an elementary teacher and impacted the lives of many children at Wilson, Robert E. Lee and Lamar campuses before retiring in 1975. At age 19, she married Gus Spicer Leftwich whom she met through friends in Amarillo, Texas. They married in March 1935 in her parents home in Shamrock and then resided in Amarillo. Seven years later, the couple moved to Shamrock when her husband became a Texaco wholesaler. Now a family of three, with only daughter Ann who was born in 1936, they moved to Childress when Gus became the local consignee for Texaco in 1945. Margaret was a champion for many causes in Childress and surrounding areas. She was named Childress Woman of the Year, served on several boards for many years including the Childress Library, Childress Museum and Clarendon College. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, several women’s clubs, an active member of the First United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School with Richard Bird to high schoolers. She was honored by the United Methodist Women in 2017. Margaret was preceded in death by parents Harry Perdue Mundy and Lola Blanche (Crump) Mundy; in 1978 husband Gus Leftwich; son-in-law Ben L. Simmers in 2004; grandson-in-law Wayne R. Hanson in 2012; and nephew John I. Mundy. Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Margaret Ann Simmers of Childress; granddaughters Anne Marie Hanson of Round Rock and her daughter Lauren Shadle, Elaine and husband Matt Garrison and sons, Bryce and Ben of Shallowater; only niece Judy Mundy Youens of Houston; and several beloved Mundy family cousins. The family wishes to extend sincere gratitude to special caregiver and friend, Mary McMinn, as well as the CRMC Hospice staff. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to local charities of your choice. Margaret Mundy Leftwich will be remembered as ALWAYS A LADY, A CHAMPION, MENTOR AND AN INSPIRATION EVEN INTO HER LAST YEARS.
