Obituary for Margaret Brown

A host of angels carried Margaret Jo Brown to her heavenly home at 5:37PM on January 24, 2018 in Childress, TX. She was born on February 9, 1927 to John Pope and Elsie Mae (Dutton) Taylor in Childress, where she happily lived all but five of her almost ninety-one years. A funeral service honoring her life, love and legacy will be on Monday, January 29, 2018 at 10:00AM at the First Baptist Church in Childress, TX with Rev. Chad King officiating. Burial will follow in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. She attended Childress High School, where she graduated as the Valedictorian of the Class of 1944. She briefly attended Texas Tech University. On June 12, 1946 she married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Billy Lee (Bill) Brown in Childress. They made their home in Childress until Bill was transferred with the Burlington Northern Railroad to Galesburg, IL in 1963. While in Galesburg, she was the auditor’s assistant at Knox College. They later moved to Alliance, NE in 1967 where she was the High School Principal’s secretary. They were thrilled to return home to Childress in March of 1968. She worked as the Jr. High Secretary and Superintendent Odell’s secretary in the 1950’s and then later as the bookkeeper for CISD until her retirement in January 1987 after twenty-five years of service. She was always a very avid Childress Bobcat and Texas Ranger fan. In June of 2011, she made Cottage Village her new home where she lived and where she loved until her death. Jo was a member of the Eastern Star, Childress Retired Teachers Association, where she served as President for many years, and an active member of First Baptist Church in Childress for almost 70 years. She was never happier than when she served and taught the Bible to all ages from preschoolers in VBS, high school, college, young adults, to her last class of senior adult ladies. She was also involved in the homebound ministry and in the church library. She committed her life to Jesus Christ at an early age and it deeply affected her priorities and the way she lived her daily life. She not only knew and loved the Bible but she lived it. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Bill, in 1998 and her precious son, Gary, in 2006. Those left to cherish her loving memory are her son, Mark Brown and wife, Leslie of Abilene, and her daughter, Susan Holland and husband, John of Hurst; loved and adored grandchildren, Emily Todino of Chatham, IL, Ryan Holland and wife, Meggie of North Richland Hills, TX, Dr. Will Brown and wife, JoAnna of Gilbert, AZ, Matt Holland and wife, Julie of Norman, OK, Bethany Lutz and husband, Aaron of League City, TX; precious great-grandchildren, Jake Todino of Peoria, IL, Drew Todino of Bloomington, IL, Charlotte, Elizabeth and Margaret Kate Holland of North Richland Hills, TX, Addie Jo, Evan and Annalee Grace of League City, TX, and Everleigh Brown of Gilbert, AZ; brother-in-law, Robert Brown and wife, Dorothy of Dripping Springs, TX; and a host of extended family and friends. The family requests memorials be given to the First Baptist Church Mission Fund in her memory. (300 Avenue C, N.W. Childress, TX 79201)
