Marcia was born on June 22, 1932 to W.W. "Pete" Kinney and Corene Loftis Kinney in Paducah, TX. She moved to Childress at age 5 and attended Childress High School in the Class of 1950 although she actually graduated as valedictorian of the Class of 1949. On February 13, 1948, Marcia was introduced to the love of her life, Bill Leonard by Slick and Cecil Mills at a Valentines party. She and Bill began dating and shortly after, they both attended West Texas State College (West Texas A&M University). After approximately a year, they married on August 20, 1950. They moved back to Childress and she and Bill both taught in Community Center, TX. Marcia then went to work for Bowers and Black Insurance for several years. She became a stay-at-home mother upon the birth of their first child, Karen. She remained in the home until Karen and Julie were an older age and then began working at the Childress County Appraisal District as a clerk. She retired from the appraisal district after 14 years of service. After retiring, she worked for Pat and Mildred Steed at H.S. Black Abstractors, Inc.
Marcia was a Godly woman who dedicated her time to the service of others. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Childress and if the doors were open, she was there. Marcia taught The Kindergarten Class for over 50 years. She was a member of the Women of Faith Circle, Hughes Bible Class, Methodist Women’s Kitchen Crew and she helped plan and serve the Agape Meals at Thanksgiving.
Her dedication to the service of others was not only to her church, but also to her community. She was a part of the inception of Relay for Life in the Childress area and helped with the event for many years. She was a member of Childress We Can Care and a 50 year member of the Childress Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Cross Country and Rolling Plains Emmaus Communities and participated as a team member for both communities.
Marcia loved children and began volunteering to read to Childress Elementary when her grandkids began attending. She was a 4-H leader for many years. She was a proud supporter of Bobcat sports and the Big Blue Band and she loved to coach from the stands.
