Obituary for L.J. Brannon

L.J. Brannon, age 92, died Saturday, December 28, 2013 in Childress. Graveside services will be at 2:30 PM Tuesday, January 07, 2014 in Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery with Bro. Tatum of Sunray Church of Christ officiating . Burial will be in Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. L.J. was born Thursday, February 24, 1921 in Bonham, TX to Ike and Lizzie (Parker) Brannon. During his first marriage to Ruby L. Brannon, L.J. had six children. He attended service faithfully at the West Laurel St. Church of Christ while living in San Antonio and later at the Harper Street Church of Christ. He was active in all the churches that he attended, serving as either Assistant or Acting Minister. A God-fearing man, L.J. believed in "walking the straight and narrow", and was a Job according to his family, always encouraging them to be patient and wait on the Lord. They taught their children that they should strive to do the Lord's will, not man's, and to always obey the law and "do the right thing." He was an Associate Pastor most recently here in Childress at Fairview Church of Christ. L.J. was proud to have served his country as a veteran of the United States Air Force for 21 years. His military career took him all over the world, until he retired at the rank of Staff Sargent at Kelly Air Force Base. He then worked as an Administrative Clerk for Kelly Air Force Base until his second retirement. On December 25, 1978, L.J. married Mattie Crayton in San Antonio, Texas. He was a loving husband and father, and a happy, jovial man who made others happiness a priority. L.J. and Mattie first moved to Childress in September of 1990 to become the full-time minister at the East Side Church of Christ. When that closed, they moved their membership to the Fairview Church of Christ where he naturally became an active member. They were also active community members, even sharing their loving and caring home when they adopted five young brothers. In June 2001, they moved with the boys to Marion, Texas near San Antonio, but returned to Childress in November 2007, where they have remained. L.J. was preceded in death by his parents, Ike and Lizzie (Parker) Brannon; a daughter, Lisa LaMon Mitchell; two brothers, Lottie and B.C. Brannon; two step-brothers, Erliss and Opal Harris; and six sisters, Rose Ann Harris, Rose Lee Walking, Josephine Diggs, Corene Cobb, Pearline Mc Alister and Erlene Staples.
