Obituary for Lewis "Sonny" Nichols

Lewis “Sonny” Nichols, age 85, passed away on March 6, 2018. Funeral services will be at 2 PM on Friday, March 9, 2018 at the Joe E. Jones Memorial Chapel in Childress Cemetery with Rev. Ronnie Shoffner and Steve “Smitty” Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2018 from 6 to 8 PM at Johnson Funeral Home. Sonny was born on August 4, 1932 in Childress to Lewis S. and Zola Huckaby. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War as a Tank Sargent with Company C 1st Tank Battalion and received the National Defense Service Medal. He married the love of his life, Dorothy Moran, on May 25, 1951 in Childress. Sonny was a farmer and rancher, and liked to participate in team roping and go square dancing. He was a member of the original Old Settlers Rodeo Association, and early on the first morning to kick off the annual celebration would set up the chuck wagon downtown and serve coffee to those in attendance. He was a member of the Childress Elks Lodge, the American Legion, and had been a member of the First Baptist Church since he was 15. After discharge from the Army, Sonny worked with the Fort Worth and Denver Railroad in the Car Department where he and his team would be called out repair the engines that had derailed or broke down between stations and in the round house. Sonny and Dorothy owned and operated the Childress Livestock Commission for several years. Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law Larry Keys, brothers R.C. Nichols and Pete Nichols, sisters Laverne Watkins and Georgia Bowman, and nephew Thomas Tippett. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Childress; daughter Sharlynn Keys of Sunset, TX; son Dub Nichols and wife, Debby of Amarillo, TX; daughter Cindy Johnston and husband, Danny of Granbury, TX; sisters Myrl Burchett and Irma Custer, both of Childress, TX; grandchildren Tina Ennis, Sundy Sharp, Trevor Nichols and wife, Hailey, Mary Brewer and husband, Tyler, Kati Rhodes, and Brady Johnston and wife, Sarah; great-grandchildren Jason and Cecily Ennis, Dax Sharp, Riley Nichols, Tessla, Trently and Tripp Brewer; Nick White, Brody and Cooper Marcott, and Josey Rhodes; and several extended family and friends.
