Obituary for Leona "Midge" Lewellen

Leona "Midge" Lewellen died Monday, May 1, at her home in Sapulpa, Okla. where she had lived for the past 17 years, after moving from Childress, where she lived with her husband Elbert for almost 50 years. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 4, 2017, at Faith In Grace Church in Sapulpa, Okla. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at Childress Cemetery. Leona and Elbert were married on Sept. 2, 1950. Midge was born on April 14, 1932 in Joliet, Illinois to John Nathaniel and Mary Pauline Surdey. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and friend, known for her sweet nature and unassuming manner. After raising six children, she worked as a home health aide, and continued to pursue her love of gardening, reading, dancing, socializing and taking care of her pet dogs, first BooBoo, then, Newton. She attended the First BaptistChurch in Childress and the Faith In Grace Church after moving to Sapulpa. She is preceded in death by her husband Elbert, her parents, brothers, John and Robert Surdey, and sisters, Elizabeth Tynor and Delores Koerner. Survivors include her brothers Cecil and Leonard Surdey, her sons Max Lewellen of Haskell, Okla., and Dan Lewellen of Tulsa; daughters Brenda Gaba and husband, Jeff of Dallas, Vicky Brehm and husband, Kenneth of Tulsa, Laura Hill and husband, Donald of Collinsville, and Tammy Lewellen of Tulsa; grandchildren, James Underwood and wife, Mary, John Underwood and wife, Kristin, Julie Selica and husband, Ernie and Adriana Underwood; Kyla Garcia; LaTisha Hernandez-Lewellen, Andy Hernandez; Sharon Vincent and husband, Shane, Laci Hester and husband, Kyle, Blake Lewellen; Jason Hill, Tenley Jimison and husband, Travis; William Hill and wife Renee; and Matthew and Jake Gaba, 25 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
