Obituary for John "Johnny" Rowell

John Alex Rowell, age 95, of Childress, Texas died Friday, September 9, 2016 at the Ussery-Roan State Veterans Home in Amarillo, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm, Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will immediately follow in Newlin Cemetery, Newlin, Texas under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. John was born to the late John A. Rowell Sr. and Lillie (Rushing) Rowell on January 21, 1921 in Childress, Texas. He attended school in Newlin and Estelline. After graduation, he was employed by his uncles, B.E. Rushing and R.E. Dunn at Helpy Selfy Grocery (later Rushing Food Store) from 1934 to 1965. After working at the Grocery Store, he started a new career with the U.S. Postal Service in Childress from 1965 to 1982. John was a lifelong resident of Childress County. John was a member of the 904th Signal Co., Department of Aviation from October, 1943 to October, 1945 in England. He worked in the radio repair shop. John Rowell was certainly an Ambassador for Childress, Texas. John was an active member of the Bible Baptist Church having served nearly every capacity of the Church. He served on the Childress County Heritage Museum Board of Directors. He regularly drove Childress residents to Amarillo for medical treatment. The Childress and Index and The Childress Chamber of Commerce recognized John by naming him as the recipient of the “Man of the Year” and “Lifetime Achievment” awards. His grandfather, T.S. Rowell settled on land in Northwest Childress in the early 1890’s and was a Childress County Commissioner. His uncles, W.H. Meador, R.E. Dunn and B.E. Rushing owned a general merchantile store in Newlin in the early 1890’s. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials go to the Bible Baptist Church or the charity of your choice. John was preceded in death by his parents He is survived by his loving cousins; Mary Ann Fields of Amarillo, Tx.; Linda Young and Husband Jim of Amarillo, Tx.; Woody Brownlee of Garland, Tx.
