Obituary for Janis Lawrence

Funeral services for Janis Lawrence, 80, will be held Friday, December 2, 2022 at 10 a.m. at Childress Methodist Church with Lou Ellerbrook officiating. Burial will follow in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Thursday, December 1, 2022 from 5-7 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home.
She passed away November 27, 2022 in Amarillo.
Janis was born April 2, 1942 in Childress to Carroll and Olive Collins.
She was an LVN and served on the Childress Regional Medical Center Board of Directors for two terms. She started Toys for Tots in Childress and owned Kiddies Korner. She was awarded Childress Woman of the Year twice and was a CASA director and volunteer for years. She also sold insurance and investments for many years and was part of the group that started the New For You Thrift Store. She spent many years volunteering there.
She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, James “Dude” Lawrence and second husband, Arvis Davis.
Survivors include her daughter, Julie Barber and husband, Jeff, of Amarillo; a step daughter, Tracy Prater and husband, W.E. of Breckenridge, Texas; grandchildren Emily Barber and Gage Mayer of Amarillo and Addison Barber and James Legg of Dumas; step grandchildren Megan Prater and Jacob White of Watauga, Texas and Will Prater and Caitlin Gibson of Richmond, Virginia; great grandchildren Collin Barber, Porter Segedy and Anderson Mayer; step great grandchildren Holden and Hayden White; a brother, Jimmy Collins of Amarillo; a sister, Judy Jones of Clarendon; a nephew Jeff Nickell and wife, Annette of Amarillo and a niece, Tina Hernandez and husband, Michael of Burns Flat, Okla.
The family suggests memorials to Childress Methodist Church, Childress Toys for Tots, Meals on Wheels or the Childress Food Bank.
