Obituary for James Smith

James Clyde Smith, age 78, died Wednesday, July 18, 2012 in Rowlett. Services will be at 1:00 PM Tuesday, July 24, 2012 in First Baptist Church with Tommy Jenkins officiating . Burial will be in Childress Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Johnson Funeral Home on Monday, July 23, 2012 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Clyde was born on the family farm in Lonnie, TX to William Howard and Annie Novell Smith. Known as "Cotton" in his youth, he began working at a young age on area farms and ranches. He joined the Marine Corps in 1953 serving in Cuba and Korea. While on leave in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Feb. 12, 1957, he married Betty Jo Ann Stewart of Hollis, OK. After leaving the Marines he was a cross country truck driver and various other occupations eventually settling in with Burlington Northern RR. He remained employed by the RR until medical issues moved him into an early retirement in 1987. After the loss of JoAnn he remained in Childress until his health made it necessary to move into assisted living center closer to family in Rowlett, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, William & Annie Smith, his wife Betty JoAnn, a brother, Earl Howard Smith. Survivors: Son - Jimmy C Smith, West Palm Beach, FL; Son - Joe B Smith, Rowlett, TX; Son - Shannon H Smith, Lubbock, TX; Son - Shawn A Smith, Meeker, OK; Daughter - Sharon K Zapata, Rowlett, TX; Sister - Anna Ruth Stepp, Amarillo, TX; Ten Grandchildren; Two Great Grandchildren with a third on the way.
