Obituary for Hubert Thetford

Hubert A. Thetford, age 88, passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2017 in Childress. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at 10 A.M. in the J. E. Hixson and Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Burial will follow in Prien Cemetery in Lake Charles under the direction of J. E. Hixson and Sons Funeral Home. Hubert was born on October 19, 1928 in Pleasant Hill, Mississippi to Robert Leland and Carrie Elizabeth (Kelly) Thetford. He attended Copiah-Lincoln Jr. College for two years, graduating with an Associates of Liberal Arts. He was then drafted into the United States Army where he spend two years in the Korean Conflict. During his military time, he met Colleen Richardson through a friend of his who was dating her best friend. After maintaining a long-distance relationship because of where he was stationed, they married on November 28, 1954 in Greenwood, Arkansas and shared 62 years together in love and laughter. A hard-working man, Hubert retired from Bridgestone/Firestone after working 30 years for them. In his spare time he loved to read, and was a member of St. Luke’s-Simpson United Methodist Church in Lake Charles. Above all else, he was a great all-around guy who loved his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Donald Glenn Thetford, three siblings, and son-in-law Jack Longley. Survivors include his wife, Colleen Thetford of Childress; daughter, Stacy Longley of Childress; three grandchildren, Sara Burton and husband, Todd of Childress, Jeffrey Longley and wife, Alyssa of Lubbock, and Dawston Longley and wife, Julie of Childress; three bonus grandchildren, Tiffany Dixon and husband, Kent of Magnolia, TX, Joshua Longley and wife, Susan of Magnolia, and Jennifer Heaton and husband, Jonny of College Station; eight great-grandchildren, McKenzi and Bristol Burton, Teegan Longley, Nate and Laney Graham, Sam and J. P. Longley, and Jack Heaton; sister-in-law Joye Ness and husband, James of Menifee, CA; two special nieces and nephew, Carolyn Smith and husband, Ed of Wesson, MS, Wayne Thetford of Hazelhurst, MS and Debbie Foster of Hazelhurst, MS; and numerous other nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
