Obituary for Erma L. Nickerson Johnson

Funeral services for Erma L. Nickerson Johnson, 81, will be held Saturday, April 24, 2021 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Steve Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.

Erma Lene Nickerson was born June 22, 1939 in Wills Point, Texas to George Nickerson and Ethel Preston Nickerson. She spent her childhood and adulthood in Childress, where she devoted her life to loving her family and friends and contributing much of her time and efforts to the community.

She loved to cook for others and was famous for her sweet potato pie, dressing, and collard greens. She was so sweet and had the most friendly and heart-warming smile. She loved her family very much. She was very selfless and made it a priority to ensure others were taken care of and especially her parents, siblings, children, grandchildren, great-grandchild, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and other loved ones. She was known as Mama Johnson to her grandchildren.

She was a member at Saint John Baptist Church before becoming a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Childress and loved her church where she also sang in the choir. She was a devoted and loved member of the teaching staff for the Childress Independent School District where she taught students caringly for 28 years, before retiring in 2016. She also worked for Royal Park clothing factory several years and worked nearly 20 years in the jewelry department at Walmart.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Serena Annette, a sister, Annie Faye Owens and two husbands, Curtis Johnson and James Beck.

Survivors include six children: Darrell Johnson and wife, Sharon, Ivan Johnson and wife, Denessa, Donna Manning and husband, Anthony, Darnise Moore, Barry Johnson and Kevin Johnson and spouse, Karen; son-in-law Rodney Moore; daughter-in-law Marsha C. Johnson; twelve siblings: Evelyn Monmouth, Thomas Nickerson, Ervin Nickerson and wife, Martha Sue, Wanda Hughes, Alma Jean Martin and husband, Reverend Vurn Martin, James Nickerson and wife, Renae, Ronnie Nickerson and wife, Betty, Darlene Hamilton, Sarah Baston and husband, Odelle, Cynthia Tratree and husband, Billy Ray, Brenda Wells and Floyd Nickerson and wife, Margaret; seventeen grandchildren: Gabrielle, Elle, Lauren, Ivan II, Jessica, Morgan, Megan, Courtney, Anthony II, Kristin, Alyssa, Alexandria, Barron, Hailey, Will, Tom and Lotus; one great grandchild Jaylen; brother-in-law Edward Owens, sister-in-law Linda Ford and husband, Gene; three stepchildren Carol Beck Moore, Faye Beck and James Beck, Jr.; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.
