Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, August 18, 2016 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Chad King officiating. Burial will follow in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at Johnson Funeral Home. Speck was born on March 14, 1924 in Childress to John Sherman and Lena (Payne) Henderson. He married Willie Edwina Cope on November 30, 1942 in Hollis, Oklahoma. Speck proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp, and fought in five major battles in the Pacific Theater during World War II, earning him a Purple Heart Award. After his time in the military, “Speck” became an accomplished businessman in El Paso and Amarillo for over 40 years, having owned and operated the mobile home dealership “Plains Mobile Homes.” He also loved to hunt and fish, and was a Baptist. Speck loved taking care of and helping others, often offering advice and wisdom when problems or situations seemed like mountains. Everyone who met him loved him, and his sweet and giving nature will be remembered by all those that knew him. He will also be fondly remembered by many as “PapPap.” Above all else, he was very proud of his family, and loved them dearly. He enjoyed spending time with them and felt great joy in seeing their accomplishments and accolades. He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings; his wife, Willie Edwina (Cope) Henderson; two sons, Jack D. Henderson and Doyal S. Henderson. Survivors include a son, Jon C. Henderson, and a daughter, Lena M. Mares, both of Rio Rancho, NM; nine grandchildren, Jackie Berry, Jen Lara, Krista Baldwin, Cy Norton, Jon D.
