Obituary for Donald Payton

Donald Glenn Payton, age 89, passed away on Wednesday, July 19, 2017. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Lou Ellerbrook, officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Memphis, Tennessee. Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 6 to 7 PM on Friday, July 21, 2017 at Johnson Funeral Home. Donald was born on January 3, 1928 in Cozad, Nebraska to Harry S. and Jessie (Luce) Payton. He married Betty in 2004. Donald served his country in the United States Marine Corp. He served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam, reenlisted for service five times, and retired on February 1, 1976. Before his retirement, he was a Master Gunnery Sgt., Truck Master, Motor Vehicle Dispatch, drove a gas truck and was officer in charge of the recruiting department. He received several commendations and medals - Good Conduct Medal with 6-stars, Vietnam Service Medal with 3-stars, National Defense Service with 1-star, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, expert rifle and pistol badges, Korean President Unit Citation, Korean Service Medal with 1-star, United Nations Ribbon, and the Navy Unit Commendation for Good Conduct with 2-stars. After retirement, he worked at the Ronald McDonald House in Oklahoma City as a night manager. He also worked gun shows and craft shows. He was a 50-year Mason, a longtime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and belonged to the Chaparral Sams Travel Club and the Masonic Travel Club. In his spare time, he loved to travel, play games and spend time with his family. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Marlene Payton, his brothers Roy, Homer, George, Keith and Leonard, and sisters Blanch and Loretta. Survivors include his wife, Betty Harman Payton; daughter, Brenda Medlam and husband, Jon of Wichita, KS; two sons, Donald Payton, Jr. and wife, Barbara of Florida, and David Payton and wife, Vickie of Bartlett, TN; step-son, Russell Harman of Gainesville, TX; step-daughter, Ann Ricks and husband, David of Childress; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; several nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
