Obituary for DeLois "Warttie" Cordell

Funeral Services for DeLois Warttie Cordell will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at 11:00AM at Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with Kerry Wood officiating. Private Burial will be held after services. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 16, 2014 from 6:00-800PM at Johnson Funeral Home. DeLois Estelle “Warttie” Holland Cordell passed away peacefully in Childress, Texas on June 13, 2014. Warttie was born March 15, 1932 in Childress, Texas to Vester Hays “Duke” Holland and Minnie Lee Yeary Holland. Warttie graduated from Childress High School, Class of 1950, and began her banking career at First National Bank. She married Fred H.”Freddy” Cordell on July 3, 1953. Active in business throughout her life, Warttie retired from First National Bank after 29 years. She and Freddy owned Lazy F Western Wear for 32 years. In 1970, they formed C&C Rodeo Company. As a young woman, Warttie participated in various rodeos, horse shows and in multiple events at the Fort Worth Fat Stock Show and was recognized as a Ranch Girl for many years. She received numerous pins, awards and belt buckles. Warttie was active in the Chldress Old Settlers Associatioin and local 4-H Clubs. As an owner of C&C Rodeo Company, she continued her participation in Professioal Bull Riders Association (PRCA)rodeos as a stock contractor, bookkeeper and stock breeder. Warttie and Freddy also bred and provided bulls to PRCA and Professional Bull Riders (PBR) for bull riding events held throughout the United States and Canada. Their bull "Panhandle Slim" was the 1997 PBR Bucking Bull of the Year and "Grasshopper" was PRCA Bull of the Year. "Mo’Betta was 1996 runner-up for Bull of the Year. Their success resulted in sponsorships for the bulls by Jack Daniels Distillery and Panhandle Slim Company. Warttie continued to oversee breeding operations for C&C Rodeo Company until her death. She was member of the First Presbyterian Church in Childress. Warttie was preceded in death by her husband, Fred H.”Freddy” Cordell; her parents, Vester H.”Duke” and Minnie Lee Holland; her brother, Vester H.”Duke Jr.” Holland, Jr.; and her nephew, Jeffrey L. Cordell, DVM. She is survived by her niece, Cayla Cordell Cielencki and husband, Charles, and their children, Claire Elizabeth Cielencki and Cordell Anthony Cielencki, of Amarillo. Also surviving is her sister-in-law, Jimmie Grace Cordell, of Childress; nieces and nephews, Cara Cordell Wood, Chris Cordell, Debbie Brown, Mayme Lou Cordell, Vicki Morgan Brooks, James “Jim” Morgan, Larry Brown, Roger Brown and Chuck Brown. All of her nieces and nephews remember with love the many horseback rides, cowboy hats, belts, boots and jewelry that Warttie and Freddy generously gave to them.
