Obituary for Curtis Simmons

Curtis G. Simmons, age 83, passed away on Saturday, December 3, 2016 in Childress. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, December 8, 2016 in Cooper-Sorrels Chapel in Honey Grove, Texas with Rev. Roger Simmons, Curtis' brother, officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Wood Cemetery in Honey Grove under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 1 PM until time for the funeral service. Curtis was born on January 25, 1933 in Honey Grove to Jess Augustus and Esther (Rogers) Simmons. He was raised on a farm North of Honey Grove, and he married Vernell Clark in 1955. After Vernell passed away in 1974, Curtis moved to Greenville, Texas where he worked as a Foreman of ESCO Transformer Plant for 39 years. He retired in 1996 and later moved back to Honey Grove. Curtis was a veteran of the United States Army and a longtime member of the VFW. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Vernell, longtime companion and friend Charlene Adams, son Dwayne Simmons, a brother W.J. “Buck” Simmons, and a sister Alviline Evans. Survivors include a daughter, Rebecca Simmons of Bonham, TX; a sister, Betty Mills of Lancaster, TX; a brother, Roger Simmons and wife, Marie of Childress, TX; sister-in-law Buelah Simmons of Honey Grove, TX; uncle J. D. Rogers of Blossom, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial donations may be made to Central Christian Church of Childress, PO Box 595, Childress, TX 79201.
