Obituary for Charles Keith Skinner

Charles Keith Skinner passed on April 8, 2024 at the age of 87 in Childress, Texas. He was the youngest of 8 children born to William Charles Skinner and Martha Skinner on September 20th, 1936 in Childress. The family lived in and farmed cotton in Tell, Texas. Charles went to elementary school in Tell, middle school in Carey, and graduated from Childress High School in 1954. After a couple of years working various jobs, Charles applied for and was accepted to the Texas State Highway Patrol school and worked in that capacity for 3 years before going through USMC basic training and becoming a Reserve Member of the Marine Corp. Upon completion of that, he returned as Texas State Highway Patrolman for 2 more years. It was during that time that he met Virginia Ann Cowan of Hereford, Texas. They married and Charles decided to leave law enforcement behind to start his new family. Charles and Virginia had a son, Scot Skinner. Charles began working for his in-laws, Kenneth and Anne Cowan at Cowan Jewelers and became a skilled and licensed Watchmaker, Jeweler, and Gemologist. He worked for the Cowans until buying them out upon their retirement in 1977. Charles and Virginia divorced in 1982 and Charles remarried Frankie Mason in 1983. Charles and Frankie continued to run the store until they retired in 1999. Upon retiring, they chose to move from Hereford to Childress to be near Charles’ roots and to be close to his family. Charles enjoyed playing golf, hunting and fishing. He could have been found for many years with good friends, family, and his son doing just those things.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Martha Skinner, his brothers Doy, Jim, and Jack, all of Childress and his sisters Theda Poe of Daingerfield, Tx. and Wanda Waggoner of Dallas, Tx. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Frankie Skinner, son Scot Skinner and wife Cathie of Carrollton, Tx., grandson, Cale Skinner and wife Claire of Wylie, Tx., Brad Mason and wife Cami of Dawson, Tx., granddaughters Marley, Maggie and Micha Mason of Pensacola,FL and Chad Mason and wife Brenda of Burns Flat, Ok., granddaughter Ashley and Tyler Smith of Amarillo, grandson Rason Burkett of Smithville, TX, great grandchildren Max, Cal and Lila Rose Smith of Amarillo, as well as a brother Bill Skinner of Clarksville, Tx. and sister Lee Smith of Bonham, Tx.
