Obituary for Charles Wayne Layton

Funeral services for Charlie Layton, 74, will be held Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at 10 a.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with Chris McCauley and Dr. Craig Darter officiating. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, October 20, 2020 also at JFH Chapel.
He passed away Saturday, October 17, 2020 in Childress.
Charles Wayne Layton was born November 16, 1945 in Ringling, Oklahoma to Wilfred “Chuck” Layton and Pearline Perry.
He served his country in Vietnam and it was one of the things he was most proud of. He was also a well-traveled rancher who loved being a cowboy. He worked on ranches including the Pitchfork, Swenson Land & Cattle, the Matador, Bridwell’s, the Triangle, Marshall Cator Ranch, the Chugwater Ranch in Wyoming, Robert Owens and Buckcreek Ranch.
He loved his grandkids and was their No. 1 fan and he loved his wife, Diana, and spoiled her. He loved to fish and later in life, enjoyed leatherworking. He could fix anything.
He was preceded in death by parents and stepfather, Nick Nemsgern; a son, Joel Layton; a brother, Kelly Lynn Layton and a sister, Patricia Joyce Fowler.
Survivors include his wife, Diana Layton, of Childress; a daughter Lauron Johnson and husband, Landon of Childress; a son Quenton Gould and Sabrina Covault of Lawton, Okla.; a daughter Shannon Saling and husband, Jeremy of Aubrey, Texas; a son Brandon Gould and Evan Haskins of Macon, Georgia; grandchildren Cole Martin, Casey Martin, Laney Johnson, Leigh Ann Portillo, Blayne Layton, Dalton Layton, McKinlee Barranco, Jeremy Nickle, Michael Nickle, Dakota Williams, Joshua Saling and Hayden Saling; eight great grandchildren; sister Debbie Peek and husband, Wayne, of Amarillo and brother Bryant Layton and wife, Evette, of New Braunfels.
