Obituary for Charlene Smith

Charlene Smith entered this world on March 13, 1940, in Hollywood, Calif., and passed from this life September 11, 2020, at the age of 80.
She and Jackie Miller Smith were married September 16, 1963, in Childress. He preceded her in death March 4, 1999.
Friends are invited to a viewing from 10 a.m. to Noon at Johnson Funeral Home, Saturday, September 12, 2020, followed by a graveside service at 2 p.m. Burial is under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.
Charlene grew up in Cee Vee, and after graduating from Paducah High School, she attended and completed Draughn’s Business School in Lubbock. While there, she was introduced to her future husband by her future sister-in-law, Lawanna. She and Jackie lived in Lubbock, while both worked, and Jackie went to Texas Tech. They moved to Childress in late summer of 1968, where he went to work for Childress Independent School District as a teacher and coach and Charlene went to work as secretary at the Chamber of Commerce. She was later a loan officer at First State Bank. Then she worked until her retirement for the City of Childress as Treasurer. She was also a businesswoman as co-owner of the Bridal Bit Gift Shop, and Manager of Jakson’s Restaurant.
Charlene was also actively involved with Christmas in the Park from its inception in 1995 until her death. She was active in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority where she served in several offices. She was also active in school organizations including Elementary TPO, Bobcat Mothers and the state Coaches Wives Association. She attended the Childress Church of Christ faithfully, active in Ladies’ Bible Class and Bible class teaching. She worked with her twin sister Jeanene in her floral business. She loved playing bridge on Wednesdays with special friends. Her artistic talent was second to none, and she loved sharing it. She hand-painted crosses for Hospice families, among so many other behind-the-scene activities of which no one else was aware.
She will be missed by many.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter Tammy Stegall, a grandson Jakson Smith, parents Troy Arnold and Leoma Riddell, sisters Vanna Tobias and Jeanene Johnston and brother Troy Riddell. Also, sister-in-law, Sydney Cosby, brothers-in-law Jerry Smith, Edgar Tobias and Jack Cosby, and nephew Kevin Smith.
She is survived by son Terry Smith and wife Tiana, daughter Amber Green and husband Eric, grandchildren Nelson Stegall, Logan Stegall, Ashlyn Smith, Brandt Smith, Caelyn Smith, Ayelen Green, Auburn Green and Easton Green, and great-granddaughter Presley Stegall. Other family includes brother-in-law Charlie Johnston and sisters-in-law Judy Johnson, Lawanna Smith and Pat Swindell, along with many nieces and nephews and cousins.
