Obituary for Bobby Hart

Bobby B. Hart was born July 31, 1929, in Aspermont, Texas, and he departed this life on October 7, 2018, in Childress, Texas. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 12, 2018, under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home, at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Mike Henderson officiating at 1:00 PM. Visitation will be held in the fellowship hall immediately following the service. Bobby graduated from Levelland High School in 1948. After receiving a full athletic scholarship from Hardin-Simmons University, he played for the Cowboys as the quarterback of the football team, the point guard of the basketball team, and a member of the track team. He achieved a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree from Hardin-Simmons University. While at Hardin-Simmons University from 1948 to 1952, Bobby was a star athlete. He was a letterman in football, basketball, and track. As a college athlete, his accolades were plentiful. Particularly noteworthy were Bobby’s 1951 National Individual Football Records as quarterback. In 1951, he was nationally ranked Sixth in forward passing. Further, Bobby was ranked Twelfth in total offense. In his senior season at Hardin-Simmons, he received further notoriety as All-Border, Conference quarterback in 1951. The September, 1950 Hardin-Simmons Range Rider summed up Bobby’s prowess as a college quarterback by noting that, “Hart, can put on a vanishing act with the pigskin, and is a speed merchant and owns a good passing arm.” Donna Broughton, a Baylor University graduate, attended Hardin-Simmons for a year and met Bobby Hart. They married on August 1, 1952, and for the next decade, they worked in three different states as educators. The Harts moved to Childress in 1960, and continued their profession as educators. Bobby’s career highlights include his many recognitions as a football and basketball coach, and his tenure as a principal in the Childress schools. In his later years, Bobby was blessed with doctors, nurses, and caregivers who were his former athletes and students. Each of them shared with the family how “Mr. Hart” or “Coach Hart” had an impact on their lives. They reciprocated by providing care to Bobby and reflecting the impact that he had on their lives. In addition to his career in education and coaching, Bobby had a passion for ranching and had a ranching operation with his brother-in-law, Huck Castleberry, raising Angus and Charolais cattle. His children and grandchildren cherish the memories of the time spent on the farm riding horses, feeding cattle, camping, fishing, and hunting. Bobby was an avid volunteer in sport’s activities throughout the Panhandle. He was involved with the Greenbelt Bowl Committee for over 50 years, and was chosen as an associate coach for one of the all-star football teams for three consecutive years. Bobby had a passion for volunteering with the youth, especially with his grandchildren. He was a Little Dribblers League coach, an AAU coach, and a Red River Coach for many years. He was a supporter of Childress youth, whether family or otherwise, and inspired young people in all of their endeavors and pursuits. He touched the lives of countless young people by showing compassion and teaching them to believe in themselves. After the grandchildren nominated Donna and Bobby, they were selected as the 2010 Childress County Old Settlers King and Queen and reigned over the historical celebration of the heritage of Childress County. Bobby was an active member of the Childress Lion’s Club for over 50 years and attended the First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed time and travel with friends and family, and he was known for his fun-loving nature, friendly smile, clever jokes and antics. May we find great comfort in the fact he is reunited with those whom he joins in Heaven; his devoted parents, Chancy Byron and Rosalee Graham Hart and sister, Vada Sue Mitchell Richardson; together with many close relatives and dear friends. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Donna; daughter, Carol Hart Freeman and husband, Jim Freeman of Childress; daughter, Patricia Hart Nunley Mertz and husband, Len Mertz of San Angelo; daughter Laura Marie Bird and husband Steven Bird of Childress. His six grandchildren whom he lovingly supported throughout their life, Lauren Roth and her husband, Forrest, of Houston; Paige Freeman of Houston; Catherine Nunley of Waco; Christopher Nunley of Houston; Jessica Boedeker and her husband, Luke, of Childress; and Andrew Bird of Childress. He was blessed with great-grandchildren, as well; Rhodes, Harrison, Cash and Austin Roth; Claire Berg; Hartlee Boedeker and baby boy Boedeker, whose birth we eagerly anticipate in January. Bobby is also survived by many other cousins, nieces, and nephews. Bob lived his long and full life by the Word of our Lord and we leave the following scripture as comfort to those who loved him so and as a reminder to all whose lives he touched; 2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Youth Program or the charity of your choice.
