Obituary for Berniece Wright

Berniece Havins Wright, age 90, passed away on Tuesday, May 16, 2017. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Friday, May 19, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Lou Ellerbrook officiating. Burial will follow in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Berniece was born on July 5, 1926 in Quanah to John Milton and Lou Emma (Thompson) Havins. She attended school at Williams High in Hardeman County until the family later moved to Kirkland. Berniece helped start the first girls’ high school volleyball team, and she graduated from Kirkland High School. On June 7, 1953, Berniece married Donald H. Wright in Childress. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she began teaching Sunday School in 1965 with the 3rd and 4th graders as her first class. A hard worker, Berniece worked as a switchboard operator at Childress Regional Medical Center for 28 years from 1971 to 1999. Prior to that she worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for several years also as a switchboard operator. Berniece loved to entertain and plan celebrations for friends and loved ones. She was also a fun-loving person who enjoyed playing games such as dominoes, Yahtzee, 42 and Farkle. Above all else, Berniece was a Christian woman who was a dedicated and loving sister, taking great care of her siblings and family. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers: Loyd, Carl, Littleton, Milton and Kenneth Havins; and three sisters: Gladys Trosper, Mildred Manuel and Johnnie Sue Trosper. Survivors include her son, David H. Wright of Childress; sisters-in-law Diane Mashburn and husband, Charlie, and Marguerite Havins, all of Childress; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
